Over a year after the controversial tape showing godman Nityananda and actress Ranjitha was telecast by some television channels, the two came together for the first time on Wednesday to hold a press conference to reiterate that the visuals were morphed and used to blackmail them into parting with land and money.
Nityananda charged Sun TV and Tamil magazine Nakeeran with attempts of extortion and land grabbing. On Tuesday, Ranjitha had filed a formal complaint with Chennai city police commissioner JK Tripathy against the two media houses.
Clad in white dhoti and wearing a turban and a white shawl, Nityananda walked into the press meet at a Chennai hotel, along with his devotees. Ranjitha sat two seats away from him.
"The video was doctored and the room shown in the video is not mine," he said, answering a volley of questions shot by media persons. Nithyananda alleged that a man who called himseld Sridhar claiming to be a representative of Sun TV and Nakeeran, was acting as the mediator. He also accused Sun Pictures COO Hansraj Saxena, who is now in prison in connection with a cheating case.
"Saxena threatened us on the phone and his assistant Ayyapan did it directly," he said.
When asked why he is making all the allegations now, more than a year after the incident, the godman said that he was frightened that the elements who tarnished his image, may attack his devotees.
It was in March last year the sleazy video showing the godman and Ranjitha was aired. In April, Nithyananda was arrested from Himachal Pradesh and Ranjitha disassociated herself from the video.

The dubbed version of actor Karthi’s ‘Naan Mahaan Alla’ is to release shortly in Telugu. The film, which had the scintillating Kajal Agarwal opposite Karthi, was a box-office hit in Tamil and was directed by Suseendhiran who had earlier made a successful debut in Kollywood with the film ‘Vennila Kabadikuzhu’.

A farmhouse and a 22 cent property in ECR have also been transferred to Ramlath and their two sons Rishi and Aditya. Earlier, Prabhu Deva and Ramlath filed a petition submitting that all efforts taken by mediators and elders in their families failed to find a solution and they agreed for divorce by mutual consent. Ramlath also withdrew her earlier petitions pending before the court. Prabhu Deva and Ramlath were married on September 8, 1995 and had three sons. One of their sons passed away due to cancer.

An exhibition on Taiwan’s museums got under way at the 89th-floor observatory of the Taipei Financial Center Corp. building, better known as Taipei 101, June 30.
The exposition, sponsored by the Council for Cultural Affairs, introduces 28 museums, with folk theater and do-it-yourself sessions on weekends until Aug. 31.
“After they enjoy the spectacle of Taipei from on high, we hope visitors to Taipei 101, a must-see destination for many foreign tourists, will also get a glimpse of Taiwan from the inside,” CCA Minister Emile Chih-jen Sheng said at the opening.
“More than 200 local museums are supported by the CCA, and these select few serve to show the richness and diversity of Taiwan’s local culture,” he said.
The expo is divided into four sections, focusing on museums of folk theater, music and literature, ecology and local specialties.
Shadow puppetry master Hsu Fu-chu, a winner of the Global Chinese Culture and Arts Award, started things off by demonstrating the workings of his paper puppets.
The 74-year-old’s dexterity in simulating the lively movements of humans and animals ignited great interest from children in the audience, who then sat down to learn how to make their own puppets, with materials and guidance prepared by Kaohisung’s Shadow Puppet Theater.
According to officials, this year’s event spotlights museums in southern and eastern Taiwan, as well as on the offshore islands. Last year’s inaugural show at Taipei 101 featured institutions in the northern and central parts of the country.
“Around 2 million people visited the observatory last year, with 300,000 attending the expo,” TFCC Chairman Horace Lin said. “The museum exhibition will certainly benefit all three parties—the museums, this business and the general public.”
The expo will move to the Dream Mall in Kaohsiung after it wraps up in Taipei. (THN)
